When using conventional delivery systems, the drug passes through the upper GI tract
within a short period of time after ingestion and only a portion of the drug is absorbed. The
remaining amount of drug does not get absorbed in the upper GI tract since the dosage form
has moved past the absorption rich portion of the GI tract.
Penwest developed the
GastroDose technology to allow for a targeted, controlled delivery of certain drugs to the
upper GI tract. By using GastroDose, the tablet is retained in the upper GI tract for the desired
amount of time it takes for the drug to become fully absorbed. Bioavailability is increased,
which potentially results in increased efficacy and/or decreased drug dosage and exposure.
